Oatmeal vs. Oatmalt Stout

An Oatmalt Stout was released on tap at Brewery Becker in December. This historically crafted beer is rich and smooth, with noticeable oat character. Originally brewed by Maclays in the 1890’s.

The Oatmeal Stout (which has been on tap previously since the tap rooms existence), is a sweet, smooth and creamy stout with a modest roast character.

But what’s the difference between the Oatmeal Stout and the Oatmalt Stout?Well for starters, one is made with oatmeal while the other is made with oat
malt. Although, the two beers have a related history. Oat malt is the original, patented beer. Oatmeal stouts were created by other brewers who did not want to pay the patent. Oat malt itself originated after the success of
milk stout, an earlier patented beer that was successful in getting royalties.
